The Changes From DDR4 to DDR5 RAM

While RAM has been out for many years, the changes seen between each generation is beyond what some people could have imagined. For everyday users you may not pay attention to what's being developed and getting ready to be released, those who game or tend to stay up to date on the newest technology have been anxiously waiting for DDR5 to be affordable to the average users! It's important to pay attention to what generation of RAM your computer is compatible with.

What is RAM?

So what is RAM? RAM is a common computing acronym that stands for random-access memory. Sometimes you will see it be called PC memory or just memory. RAM is your computer or laptop's short-term memory, allowing it to temporarily access and store data immediately. Different generations of RAM are not compatible across every machine as computers themselves are changing quite frequently.

Evolution of RAM

Starting in 1993 we used what we call SDR or Single Data Rate. With each new advance in RAM we have created new generations of DDR or Double Data Rate, but it wasn't until the year 2000 that we came out with DDR1, the first generation! While most computers are compatible with DDR4 those who are interested in a custom built computer or even looking to upgrade may be interested in the speeds and details of the newest RAM.

DDR5 Specifications

DDR5 is the latest generation of RAM, it was released to the public in July of 2020 but it didn't become affordable for the average joe until around July of 2023.

As you can see there has been a major improvement with the new DDR5 platform. Speeds have continuously increased over the years but DDR5 is all the hype for those interested in the newest technology.
